People, Religion, Language & Culture

Maldivians are renowned for their natural hospitality. Although the official religion is Islam, the country openly accepts and embarrasses the tourists that visit the island paradise. However, be aware of the fact that pornography, drugs and alcohol is not allowed across the border and the latter will be removed from your luggage at by the customs authorities in the airport, but will be returned to you upon your departure.

With its isolated location and the mix of races and nationalities contributing to the initial population of the country, Maldivians have developed their own language, called ‘Dhivehi’, with its own unique alphabet. However, English is widely spoken throughout the country.

And the country does have a mixed culture, with Asian, British and even African influences, and you will be able to enjoy various cultural events such as the famed ‘Bodu Beru’ (literally meaning ‘big drum’ and is rhythmic cultural dance) and ‘Bandiya’ (a dance performed by women).
